The opah (Lampris guttatus) is a highly predatory mesopelagic fish that live at depths between 800-1200 feet and can weight up to 600 pounds. A recent study by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Atmosphere (NOAA) scientists in San Diego, CA claims they are capable or raising their body temperatures 5 degrees Celsius above ambient water temperatures. While some scientists dispute the study, NOAA scientists are dubbing it the first “warm blooded fish.”
